Caravan park residents living 'on a knife edge’ as council decision looms

Residents of a caravan park say they are living "on a knife edge" as uncertainty hangs over the future of their homes. Dobrudden Farm Caravan Park in Baildon, currently home to around 100 people, has been operated by the Lawrence family for 70 years but is now at the centre of concerns over the future of the site. The proprietors first discovered the land, owned by Bradford Council, was going up for sale through an article in the Telegraph & Argus in February 2024.

Youngsters keeping 'vapes under their pillows', Bradford health official warns

Some young people are so reliant on vapes that they are "keeping them under their pillows", a public health official has warned. "They're sleeping with vapes so that when they wake up, they can smoke," said Nasan Ahmed, Senior Public Health Officer for Bradford Council. "Bright colours and flavours" are one of the key reasons behind growing numbers of young people taking up the habit, he added.

The comments come in the midst of a council-backed anti-vaping campaign that was launched in Bradford last December.

It all began when Howard Johnson, a descendant of one of the rioters, made an intriguing discovery in his father's loft.

People celebrated at Lord Mayor of York's award ceremony

A council worker who rescued a man from the River Ouse was among those celebrated at a new awards ceremony held by the Lord Mayor of York. Cyprian Madziar was named as a finalist for ‘outstanding contribution to the local community’ at the first ever Commendation Scheme ceremony held by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Martin Rowley, at the Mansion House on Tuesday (May 12). Illuminated artwork aims to spotlight ‘deprived’ area of York

An art installation that aims to highlight a “deprived” street in York has been unveiled. ‘Swarmgate’, created by Pocklington artist Gemma Wood, was lit up on Thursday 11 December. It features two large hives of resin-cast bees powered by solar electricity, and can be seen on the side of buildings in Huby Court on Walmgate. Gemma was inspired, she said, by York’s “rich” beekeeping history. “Bees are essentially the epitome of community. They all work together for a common goal,” she said.

Northern records busiest month of travel since before Covid

A York-based rail firm has seen its busiest month of travel since before the pandemic. Northern, whose services run between York and Leeds, said it recorded 8.1 million journeys between September 14 and October 11.

It marks an 8.3 per cent increase from the same time last year, and the highest number of journeys recorded by Northern in a four-week window since February 2020.

The rail company, which was nationalised by the government in 2020 because of poor performance, said demand was boosted by its recent fare sale which saw tickets priced from £2.

York rock band Robo signs to Libertines drummer’s label

A York band has said signing to a rock drummer’s record label is a “dream come true”. Four-piece art rock group Robo, aged between 19 and 23, have landed a record deal with 25 Hour Convenience Store, the independent label run by Libertines drummer Gary Powell.

Gary has been the drummer of the indie rock band since 1997. He has also played alongside legendary bands such as the Specials and the New York Dolls.

Robo was founded in York in 2023 by Francisco Garcia, Eric Wolf Bell and James Paton. Holly Brewer joined the line-up in March.

Countryside mural brightens up Malton hospital unit

A countryside mural has brightened up a North Yorkshire hospital unit.
The work is on display at Malton Community Hospital’s Springwood Unit which provides specialist care for dementia patients.
Karen Wheelhouse, activity coordinator at Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough, is behind the mural.
She said the work is inspired by the drive across North Yorkshire, surrounded by dry stone walls and farmland.
The mural depicts a countryside scene, with images of snails, ladybirds, mice, moles, chickens and tractors.

York Open Studios to return in April

Artists in York are preparing to open their doors to the public as one of the main events in the city’s “cultural calendar” returns. York Open Studios will take place in April for its 24th year. It will see artists who live or work within a 10-mile radius of York welcome visitors to their studios on the weekends of April 5 to 6 and April 12 to 13 from 10am to 5pm.
The not-for-profit event effectively transforms York into an art gallery for the two weekends.
This year, more than 160 talented makers will show and sell their work, while offering a rare behind the scenes look at their processes.
